Dear undergraduate students:

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted our lives and our teaching and learning experience this semester. As a result, the educational experience is no longer equitable for our students. While some students may continue to do well, others may not have an opportunity to excel due to not having access to all the resources they need to succeed. Moreover, the bilingual aspect of our education, as encoded in Gallaudet’s mission, is severely reduced in the sudden shift to a remote setting.

Our guiding principle is “do no harm.” To make the learning experience as equitable as possible, the University will adopt the following guidelines for grading for Spring 2020:

We recognize that the above guidelines will have an impact on many areas. We reassure you we will continue to follow the principle of “do no harm.” This means we will follow through with any exceptions to current policy that are necessary for continued success, e.g.:

If you wish to have letter grades for specific courses, you may request a letter from the Registrar’s Office showing these letter grades. Remember that the faculty will record letter grades in Bison so that information remains available. Letter grades may help with seeking employment, advanced training and/or scholarships in the future. To request documentation of letter grades, we will make available an online form on the Registrar’s Office website.

We will post an FAQ shortly on wordpress-281560-1393173.cloudwaysapps.com with additional information about the above guidelines.

We wish you all good health and success with your studies for the rest of this semester.

Sincerely,

Carol J. Erting, Ph.D.
