Leave Sharing Program

As previously communicated, the University established a Leave Sharing Program for staff and teachers. We care about your well-being, and we understand that paid time off can run out quickly.  You can apply for extended paid leave due to a medical emergency or major disaster. The forms can be found on the Human Resources website. Requests will generally be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. For eligible employees with unused annual leave, please consider donating portions of your leave to the Program to ensure its continued success.  We sincerely thank you for all of the donations to date.

Please note that the COVID-19 pandemic is considered a major disaster. If you are required to quarantine due to travel or non-work exposure, then you are eligible to apply for donated leave. Employees who are asked by the University to self-quarantine due to work-related exposure are placed on paid administrative leave. Information on the leave sharing program can be found on the Human Resources website.


Benefits Open Season

The Benefits Open Season will run from Monday, November 9 through Monday, December 14, 2020. During this period, you can enroll, change, or cancel your health, dental, and vision insurance plan without any qualifying life event. If you want to keep the same insurance plan, then you do not need to do anything. The only benefit you would need to re-enroll in is FSAFEDS. Please note that the maximum contribution remains the same at $2,750 for Health Care FSA and $5,000 for Dependent Care FSA. The Human Resources Benefits Open Season webpage contains more detailed information.

Please make sure you review the Open Season webpage, as some insurance premiums in 2021 have increased dramatically. For example, the MD IPA Self and Family plan has increased its biweekly premiums by $80.33.

Zoom Webinar on Benefits Open Season

Human Resources will host a Zoom webinar on the 2020 Benefits Open Season on Monday, November 9, 2020 from 2 to 3 p.m. We will not be having a benefits fair this year due to the pandemic. Various insurance companies will be providing webinars and/or live chats. The list of webinars can be found on our website.


CARES Act Withdrawl for Thrift Savings Plan

Due to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) created a special withdrawal rule for regular status employees affected by COVID-19. A CARES Act withdrawal is a one-time withdrawal of up to $100,000 that employees can make from their account. The early withdrawal penalty will be waived if the employee meets the eligibility requirements and more information about the CARES Act Withdrawal.


Time Off to Vote

With Election Day soon approaching, employees will be granted time off to vote in person. This is in compliance with the D.C Leave to Vote Amendment Act of 2020. Employees will receive up to two hours paid leave for voting. Please ensure you communicate with your supervisor ahead of time if you plan to take time off to vote.


Annual Compliance Requirements

Please ensure you complete the Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality forms through Adobe eSign by October 31, 2020. In addition, you must complete the training sessions through Everfi by December 18, 2020. If you have not yet received the forms through Adobe eSign or training through Everfi, please send an email to hr@gallaudet.edu.


Title IX Panelists

As shared in the Daily Digest, the Office of Title IX is looking for employees to serve as Title IX hearing panelists and/or advisors for complainants and respondents. The role of the panelist is to make an outcome determination related to sexual harassment/sexual misconduct cases at hearings, while the role of the advisor is to provide advice and/or support during the investigation and informal or formal resolution processes. Please fill out the application form if you are interested. The deadline to apply is Friday, November 6, 2020. If you have questions, please email titleix@gallaudet.edu.
