A member of the Gallaudet University faculty has tested positive for COVID-19, is receiving treatment, and is in self-quarantine. This faculty member left campus on March 12. Currently, this faculty member has only mild symptoms. We send good wishes to both the faculty member and their family, and hope for a speedy recovery.
We have been following all public health procedures and guidelines, and with this letter, we are communicating with our Gallaudet community. We notified and worked closely with DC Health while they conducted an assessment of the situation. As it currently stands, this faculty member did not have symptoms or close contact with anyone on or near the time they were last on campus. The period of exposure to risk is from onset of symptoms to 48 hours before symptom onset. As a result, DC Health, in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), considers this a very low-risk situation. This means that the risk of getting COVID-19 from this incident is the same as getting a cold or the flu doing everyday activities.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind all members of our Gallaudet community that if they believe they have any symptoms of the coronavirus, or believe that they may have been exposed to others with the virus, that they should contact their local health provider. Please see wordpress-281560-1393173.cloudwaysapps.com and visit the resource page for information in American Sign Language. Additionally, if you are a member of our community and you test positive for COVID-19, please contact our 24/7 videophone or telephone lines to let us know your name and the date and location of your test so that we can do contact tracing as needed to mitigate the spread within our community. All information will be kept confidential.
This is the first known confirmed case of COVID-19 involving a member of our community since Gallaudet University decided to transition to all remote learning.
Again, we send our best wishes to this faculty member for a speedy recovery. Stay safe and healthy.
